手術用の吸収糸について

手術時に使う吸収糸についてです。
自然に溶けるタイプのものって開封して置いておいたら溶けるものですか？
それとも皮膚を縫合した状態で吸収されないと溶けないのでしょうか？
まったくのド素人です。医療従事者ではないです。
よろしくお願いいたします。
